About Tempe Little Theatre
TLT was founded and incorporated in 1971 as a 501(c)(3) organization.
Tempe’s only non-profit,
all volunteer theatrical production company, TLT is “theater of, for, and by the community.”
It was founded by people who love live theater in order to offer the community a low-cost, alternative
cultural venue for education and entertainment.
TLT has traditionally produced four plays each year – one representing each genre – drama, comedy,
musical and mystery. Over the last few years, the focus has been on classic comedies and popular
musicals in order to build an audience base. TLT serves to deliver the excitement of affordable,
quality live theater to all residents of the East Valley and the metropolitan Phoenix Area.
TLT provides the entire community (and its local high schools, community colleges, and adjacent
Arizona State University) with an appropriate educational venue for specialized, concentrated work
by all students of the theatrical arts.
In addition, TLT provides a scholarship award program each year for graduating high school seniors with an interest in the theatrical arts. Many beginning performers and students value and seek out the opportunity to work with TLT each year, as it provides the training necessary to pursue the dramatic arts as a career or as a rewarding hobby and leisure-time activity.
TLT furnishes an appropriate outlet for the creative talents of its volunteers and members, offering opportunities for individuals, with or without formal theatrical backgrounds, to get involved in all areas of theatrical production – both on stage and behind the scenes: auditions, costumes, properties and set decoration, directing, producing, programs, box office, season tickets, rehearsals, publicity, set design and construction, hair and make-up, fundraising, newsletters, lighting and sound, ushering, and refreshments. Except for a small stipend paid to the directors of each production, all of this support is provided to TLT on an unpaid, volunteer basis. Income to cover TLT’s operating expenses is derived from box office ticket sales, membership dues, season voucher sales, grant and personal donations, and fund-raising activities
TLT currently utilizes office, storage, technical, and theater space at the Tempe Performing Arts Center (TPAC), which is operated by the City of Tempe. TPAC is located at 132 East Sixth Street, on the northwest corner of Forest and Sixth Street. For the 36the season, 2007-2008, TLT moved into the new Tempe Center for the Arts located at 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. An original stakeholder,
TLT
is thrilled to be a part of that wonderful facility and performs exclusively in that venue.
According to its Bylaws, TLT is governed and operated by a Board of Directors whose members volunteer
their time and service, and are elected from and by the general membership. General membership
meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.at the TPAC location. Board meetings
are held on a monthly basis. Everyone is welcome to attend. For additional information, call our
